About Aquatic Lighting

With the ever increasing popularity of the reef hobby, hobbyists are more concerned than ever with the need to supply both the proper spectrum, and needed intensity for the well being of photosynthetic invertebrates. Standard wattage fluorescent lamps may have the proper spectrum, but lack the intensity that corals required for deeper water inverts, and planted tanks.

You can think of a VHO as you would a light bulb. Obviously, a 110w. light bulb will be almost 3 X as bright as a 40w. With fluorescent, however, a special ballast is required to run H/O or VHO lamps.

The use of VHO, for aquatic environments, is made practical through the use of the IceCap, a solid state electronic ballast the runs cool, extends the life of the lamps, and runs the lamps with reduced heat, while saving 40% line current. Previously, VHO required large, hot, energy wasting ballast's, which caused lamps to run at high temperatures, requiring replacement every 3-4 months.

VHO lamps are the same size and have the same 2-pin design as standard fluorescent lamps. You can easily retrofit existing light strips, mount the lamps in a hood, or simply lay the lamps over a glass or acrylic support.
