Live Rock is collected and many of the life forms on it die. All our collectors scrub the collected rock. Scrubbing the dead matter minimizes the odors and significantly reduces the time it takes take to cure.
Our Fiji Live Rock is cured before it is shipped for a full 6 weeks on open air wire shelves where it is frequently sprayed with fresh ocean water, keeping the beneficial bacteria alive but driving out undesirable creatures like Mantis shrimp and Bristle worms. Our Fiji rock is pre-cured and almost completely free of pests when you receive it.
Uncured Live Rock:Sought after by hobbyists because of the additional life forms found on it. Do not introduce uncured rock to an existing aquarium without first curing it.
Curing Live Rock:
To cure live rock you need the following equipment. A Large container, plastic garbage etc..protein skimmer, powerheads, heater, a small scrub brush, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate test kits.
These are Key elements in the process of curing rock. Scrub off any dead sponges and soft corals. Use good quality saltwater (RedSeaFishSalt) and no lights for at least 10 days to avoid algae bloom, keep water heated (72-76 F). Change 50-100% of the water every 2-3 days. Provide plenty of water movement within the container, powerheads provide plenty of oxygenation. The curing process will take between 2-4 weeks depending on how well you originally cleaned the rock, the amount of die-off, the quality of skimming, and the size and frequency of water changes.
A simple and very effective way to treat for and eliminate unwanted critters from fresh Live Rock is to dip each piece in a bucket of very saline water (SG 1.030) for 20-30 seconds. Mantis shrimp will quickly evacuate the rock. Bristle worms will also crawl out and can be pulled from their holes with tweezers.
